Still Working for 24-Hour Ambulance Service in Kula
February 2003

Help extend our Kula ambulance hours. In recent years, thanks to your efforts, our ambulance hours have been increased to 12 hours a day, but we need to keep working for full-time, 24-hour a day service. During this legislative session Representative Kika Bukoski, Senator J. Kalani English, and others have sponsored legislation and are working hard to fund additional ambulance service for Maui.

Information about Kula ambulance service to include when you contact our legislators:
Kula's ambulance is on duty only 12 hours daily, from 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Only two other areas in the state have less than 24-hour service, When emergencies occur outside of these hours, the nearest available ambulance responds. This increases the response time from 15-20 minutes to as much as 45 minutes and leaves the community whose ambulance responds (Makawao, Central, and even Kihei or Lahaina) without the locally-based ambulance.
The Kula ambulance territory was recently increased to include the area from Omaopio Road to Five Trees - adding Kamehameha School, King Kekaulike High School, Kulamalu Village (the Dowling project), and Kula 200. The Kula ambulance responds to calls from Five Trees to Kaupo, up to the summit in Haleakala National Park, and down to the junction of Omaopio/Pulehu (below Kula Glen).
Kula residents and visitors are involved in high risk occupations and activities including hang-gliding, down-hill biking, ranching, hunting, cycling, farming, hiking, and horseback riding.
Census 2000 data indicates population is increasing in Kula and is expected to continue growing with the build-out of existing lots and the Hawaiian Homelands developments at Waiohuli and Keokea. The data also show rapid growth in the number of people in the age groups 45-64 (123%) and 65 and over (34%). These changes have resulted in an increasing need for emergency medical services, with ambulance calls increasing 40% percent from 1998 to 2002.

Contact your legislators now. Write, call, email, or fax them to. Share any experiences you've had - waiting for help when the Kula ambulance is off-duty, or the excellent service you've received from our Kula-based paramedics headed by Harry Vant Groenewout.
