General Meeting Minutes - General Election Candidates Forum 15 October 1998 Call to Order The meeting was called to order by Past President Alan Kaufman at 6:35 p.m. in the Kula Community Center. Approximately 45 people were present. (During the evening, attendance grew to approximately 85.) Treasurer's Report Secretary's Report In the interest of time both reports were dispensed with. Copies of the minutes of the August General Meeting were available. Communications Committee Reports Unfinished Business New Business In the interest of time these items had not been placed on the agenda. Program: Primary Elections Candidates Forum Alan Kaufman introduced Dick Mayer, program coordinator, who explained the program. All candidates for contested, local races were invited; gubernatorial candidates and candidates in uncontested races were not invited; candidates for each office were asked to respond to four questions - three from the moderator and one from an opponent; and audience members could submit questions to be asked, time permitting. It was explained that all citizens could vote for council members from all districts, not just the council member from their "residency district". Following is a list of the invited candidates, with incumbents (*), absentees (abs), and parties (Democrat, Green, Republican) indicated by D, G, and R. Council West Maui: Jo Anne Johnson (R); Dennis Nakamura* (D) Lanai: Alberta DeJetley (R); Riki Hokama (D). Haiku: Sam Clark (R); John Wayne Enriques (D); Nick Nikhlananda (G). Kahului: Mike Davis (D); Norman C. Franco (R). Upcountry: Bob Monden (D); Charmaine Tavares* (R). Wailuku: Carol Ball (R); Dain Kane (D). South: Joel Bertram (G, abs); Lynn Britton (D); Wayne Nishiki* (R, abs). House 11th District: Dee Brown (D); Chris Halford* (R). 10 th District: Dan Evert (R); David Morihara* (D). Senate Avery Chumbley* (D); Richard Lafond (R). Board of Education Lance Kawika Collins; Mike Victorino. Mayor Kimo Apana (D); Alan Arakawa (R). Announcements KCA Membership: A membership table was available for confirmation of membership status and payment of dues.
