Thanks to the County of Maui Board of Water Supply for supplying the following
information and images.
Kula and Water
- 3 of 9 Board of Water Supply members are Kula residents (however, this may change after
3/31/99).
- 1999 marks the 50th anniversary of the Department. In 1949, there were 769
consumers in Kula (as measured by number of meters). In 1998, there are 2778 consumers.
- Maui families pay an average of $1.62 for every 1000 gallons of water they use (based on
consumption of 600 gallons per day).
- The Department of Water Supply has spent over $60 million since 1992 to comply with EPA
and Hawaii State Dept. of Health regulations
- Consumer Confidence Reports will be out in October 1999 theyre to inform
consumers about the quality of their water.
- Average daily consumption for Kula:
1995 = 4.17 Million Gallons per Day (MGD)
1996 = 4.23 MGD
1997 = 3.44 MGD
1998 = 3.94 MGD
2010 = 5.00 MGD????
- Y2K: MECO assures us that they will supply electricity next New Years, and they
have a 4 weeks worth of fuel stored. Even if theres no electricity, our
Piiholo and Olinda Treatment Plants both have generators and fuel for 3 4 days.
After that, if theres still no electricity, we could distribute unfiltered
chlorinated water via gravity. Kula could get at least 250 gallons per person per day.
- The Board approved $60,000 in February for the Nature Conservancy to protect the East
Maui Watershed, which is the source of Kulas water. The State will match this money
2 to 1 ($120,000) and it will be used for controlling the area biggest threats: miconia,
feral pigs and deer.
